Catholic Church

I suppose that I have to bear in mind that my son goes to a Catholic school, but reading again about the repeated sexual abuse of children by catholic priests in Ireland in the 1970s only re-confirms my intense dislike of the Catholic Church.

The article is here

For the head of the Catholic Church in Ireland to fail to take responsibility for his inaction is totally inexcusable. That is tantamount to admitting that he didn't know right from wrong simply on the grounds of not having received adequate training on how to handle the situation.

How anyone can be in that position and not take action in the face of evidence of child abuse would be difficult enough to accept from anyone, but from someone who has gone on to be the leader of the church in that country beggars belief.

  1. The Vatican spends millions and millions shutting people up.
I suppose it's not that much more difficult to believe than virgin births and the other foundation beliefs than the church is built on.

It is run by mere mortals, all of whom are fallible.
It would seem pretty obvious that if you have any organisation run largely by celebates, you are going to attract some wierdos - those wierdos at the top/making decisions oblivious to the damage that sexual abuse does to lives.
I'm not trying to defend them - you feel violated when your home has been invaded so when it's your body the result must be horrendous, with no escape.
I'm sure that J is fine - the good guys are the vast majority!

  5. I'm not worried at all about J, but I find it abhorrent that the issue was ignored and even worse, hidden by those given the responsibility for protecting the children.
It is indicative of the meaningless of the churches mission that nobody had the nerve to stand up against what they all knew was wrong. Be that through fear for their jobs or whatever. If you put yourself up as God's representatives on earth and then allow this to happen then you can't expect to have any legitimacy in the eyes of sentient beings.
Few organisations make me as angry as the catholic church...

  6. all organisations are run by mere mortals, I can't think of any others who have so consistently let their own members down and done so by f%&king kids

  8. Someone else doing something worse is no excuse at all. Should the guys who broke into your house be excused because someone else shot somebody whilst breaking into another house and stole more stuff?
    Invalid argument.
The fact that some knew (and it was know throughout the upper echelons of the organisation) is unacceptable.
I don't see a great deal of good coming from Catholicism - a religion based on guilt and fear run entirely by people who have decided that they don't want to be part of normal society.
