Motorbikes

Wittering on about wanting a motorbike has become something of a habit for me. It was only a year or so ago that I decided that I am gown up enough to be trusted with one. Now that we are living in a relatively safe country where the roads are not too busy and people are not too crazy it seems like a good opportunity. There is the added bonus that as we only have one car it would give us some more flexibility for transport in the summer as motorbikes seem to be off the road from November to March.

So with all of those good reasons to give it a go, here come the negatives. Firstly getting a license takes some time and costs about 8500kr (£850 is or approx $1500). Secondly everything costs a fortune, for example this Suzuki GS500 costs £3000 in the UK, but £5000 in Denmark.
This was never going to be a cheap game, but it is probably more expensive here than most other places.
If I really want to do this then I'll have to save for the lessons next year and take it from there. So I promise I'll not mention it again for a while...

accident stats for bikes suggest that the risk of severe damage or injury are a significant multiple of those for a car. Add in the cost of good protective gear and you will add at least as much again as the licence. Not worth the expense or the risk. Buy yourself a moped if you want independent transport and stop dreaming. Bikes are a bad idea! GBN

I think I could run to a motorbike for your birthday as long as it's only the same size as the picture, i.e. dinky.ajen

  7. The last year the figures are published for there were 2472 recorded accidents on motorcycles in Denmark (there are approx 1.5 million motocycles in Denmark) and there were 18804 accidents on bicycles. THere are obviously more bicycles than motorbikes but for there to be the same proportion of accidents there would have to be significantly more bikes than people in the country.

Speaking statistically, it hurt 100% when I got knocked off mine- and it was 100% not my fault! Think of how many times you have pranged your various cars!

I have been riding motorcycles since I was 21 and currently own and ride three of them.
You have to ride very carefully and anticipate the stupidity of others to avoid accidents.
I have encouraged both sons to ride motorcycles and they don't. My parents talked like GCN and GBN and banned me from even bicycles.
    Look at the result.
