I did manage to ride with the bike club both days over the weekend. Saturday was 2½ hours of hard work, but OK. Sunday was worse as it was the hardcore guys and I had to let discretion be the better part of valor after 1:15 and head for home. We had been hammering at >35km/h for the duration and the plan was to ride about 125km. I can't do that so I would have had a long ride home on my own and been dead for the remainder of the day.
Instead of killing myself on my bike, we went to a small local exhibition of alternative energy things for the home. We are considering the options for changing our oil heating at some point because it is rather expensive to run now that heating oil is ~80 pence per litre (compared with 40-45 pence in England I see) so we have looked at heat exchanger that take warmth from the ground or the air and also solar panels. Solar looks good but is not enough on it's own so that may already be out. Now we need to see how good the payback is on the heat exchangers before we do anything dramatic. The tedium of domestic life eh?
No. We can't have it delivered here and bring it over!
ReplyDeleteHeat pump would be a better description than exchanger - unless you have geothermal heat available. ie some hot volcanic rocks underground. With the heatpump you pay for electricity to turn the pump instead of burning gas or electricity to make heat.
ReplyDeleteTh downside is that pumps and pipes are more costly and less reliable than gas burners or electric elements.
What about the district heating like B&T have?
Here endeth the lesson
